As a slave who was able to escape, travel to Europe, purchase his freedom and dedicate his life to helping end slavery, Frederick Douglass seems to have lived many lives rather than one amazingly full life. His experiences taught him much about race relations in America and the hypocrisy that is America. In this speech, Douglass employs his acquired knowledge and rhetorical skills to reveal this truth to his oblivious audience. Analyzing the voices Douglass represents, primarily the slave and the Christian, it is evident that he speaks from a place of undeniable authority.
